When Simon was called by Jesus to be one of his disciples, Jesus changed his name to Peter (The name Peter means rock). I kind of laugh at this name because at some points he was more of a “rock head” than a rock. I really draw hope from it though because when Jesus named him Peter he saw the man Peter would become. It was not a pretty transformation though. My transformation (still in progress) is not pretty either. There are days when I seem to be going forward and then there are those when I’m heading backwards.
One of the stories we read about Peter is how he walked on water. Peter saw Jesus walking on the water and he got out of the boat and walked on water to Jesus. Peter was good until he took his eyes off Jesus. When he did this he began to sink and Jesus had to save him. I have done this many times. I step out in faith and then the adversity I face around me causes me to take my eyes off Jesus. I sink into a pit of self-doubt and fear. Jesus has to rescue me from this pit pretty often. The thing that amazes me is that he is faithful to reach down and pull me out time after time.
Another thing we read about Peter in the Bible is that he denied Christ three times. Have I denied Christ? I most definitely do with my actions. If I do not live Christ consistently wherever I am, I deny him to all who see me. We are also called to look the same in public as we do in private. Jesus sees all, hears all, and knows our very thoughts. Does he find me lacking in my private places? The best part of the story of Peter is his restoration.
Jesus tells Peter he will use him to build his church. That is awesome! This is when he became Peter the rock. We all have that possibility in our lives. The goal is to keep our eyes on Jesus. He is perfecting us day by day as we head towards eternity with Him in Heaven.
Never give up! Get out of the boat and walk with confidence and never take your eyes off Jesus.
He has a new name for you too!
