Election 2016 has been one that rivals no other one that I
have seen. I would not be forthcoming if
I didn’t admit to doing some hand-wringing and fretting about how things will
look come January 20 when our 45 president will be
sworn in. The problem is that I’m
looking at the human side of things instead of trusting in the truth of God’s
word. I needed to take a deep breath.
My pastor helped me to look to the Bible for the truth of
what the election outcome will mean to me as a Christian and a ministry
leader. He did not do this by telling me
who to vote for. If we read our Bibles
we will know how to vote. In it God lays
out His truth and a road map for living out our faith in this world. I can also pray for wisdom and He will give
it. Instead he told us how to look at
our government and its leadership. We can
find the truth in Romans 13:1 “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing
authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist
are established by God.” The government is
established by God. The president will
be put in power by God. This does not
mean that every leader is a good one with Godly values. We can look throughout history and know that
is true. We are called to be in
subjection to our governmental leaders no matter who they are. This is a hard one to swallow if we do not
appreciate what they stand for but we are commanded to do it.
only one exception to this rule and it is if our government calls us to disobey
God. There are many examples of when men
and women had to stand against those in power so as not to disobey God. We can find examples of this in Exodus 1, Daniel
1, Daniel 3, Daniel 6, and Acts 4-5.
There was a price to pay for each of these instances and also blessings
from God for those who did. We will have
to accept the consequences when and if we are called to take this same stand in
the future. It will, however, be worth
the cost to obey God over man.
will I do my job as a pregnancy center director if the president is
pro-choice? The same way I have been
doing my job every day that I have been doing it to this point. I will read God’s word, continue to do what
it tells me is right and trust God for the rest. We have had many pro-life presidents,
congressmen, and senators who have not seen to it to that abortion would be
outlawed just as Supreme Court justices have not overturned Roe v Wade. We cannot just trust men to get that job
done. We need to lean on God and to pray
for a change in the hearts of all people to respect life again. This
would be life at every stage and for every person with no exceptions.
blessing it is to know God is in control.
Who could manage this world without that truth? No Christian should be
wringing their hands and fretting over this election (myself included), instead
we should pray. Pray for this country we
love. We also need to live out our
Christian testimony. If we worked on
this we would not have time for the other nonsense. “Have I not commanded
you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with
you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 Amen! Julie
What does it mean to
Just what does it mean to be pro-life? The answer would be to protect all life with
the emphasis (for my blog) being on unborn life. We can do that by voting
against those who do not support life, giving to pro-life causes with both our
time and finances, and speaking truth about abortion to all who will listen, just to name a few. These are
all true but it goes deeper. There is
more to this story.
When a woman is seeking an abortion we on the pro-life side
can tend to look at that decision in just one way and that is that they will be
ending a precious life. That is true but
what are the reasons someone seeks an abortion?
What if they were raped, are attending college or school, struggling
just to make ends meet, not married, or the baby’s father has ditched or
threatened to ditch if they keep the child? I’m not suggesting any of these
reasons make abortion acceptable; they do not, but that these are real life
situations that women who are seeking abortions are facing and they are in a
crisis. These women realize they are
ending the life of their child, but they see it as their only reasonable
choice. They are truly facing a crisis
decision. In a crisis we tend to want see
an end to the situation as quickly as possible to allow us to move on with our
lives. You can see why abortion seems
like the right answer for some.
Pregnancy Resource Centers exist to help women in crisis
pregnancies. We do this by offering them
the help they need to either raise their child or look into the option of adoption. We do not say “abortion is not the answer”
without giving them the resources they need to see that continuing their pregnancy
is their best option. Our peer advisers
listen to the woman’s concern without judgment and with love and acceptance. We
show them how they can earn diapers, diaper wipes, car seats, cribs, clothing,
and much more. The programs we offer are
incentive programs, and these moms feel the pride of taking care of their
families. We offer parenting classes to
give them the skills needed to raise happy and healthy children. We also offer
a shoulder to cry on. It is not unusual
for us to ask to pray right on the spot for whatever situation our clients are
dealing with. We are an extension of the
church into a hurting world where an individual may not feel comfortable or
even desirous in seeking out a church.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a need to offer ultrasounds so they
can see the beauty of their child growing inside of them, providing affordable childcare
for those trying to stay in school or college, help in obtaining GED’s,
providing Christian resources for counseling, job training, and much more. If we want to be called pro-life, then we
need to be ready to offer our resources and time to walk alongside these
moms. We cannot turn our heads and say “they are not
There are no pregnancies that happen by mistake. God brings each child into the world at exactly
the right time. As the church (Christians) we need to look
after these little ones and that begins by looking after their parents. I believe being pro-life means providing the
support to see every life develop and bloom into their God-given role in
society. We are at a crossroads in our
American society where we can stand with these precious moms and truly be
pro-life, or we can stand by and watch life be devalued and ended while we do
nothing but speak “pro-life”. I pray we
can change the tide before it is too late. We can and must be God’s hands and
feet to women facing crisis pregnancies.
A few weeks ago the board and I had a meeting with
another pregnancy center director to pick her brain about going medical and
offering ultrasounds. We, as a board and staff, are taking the first steps
towards seeing this vision for our ministry come to fruition. We knew we had a lot of questions that needed
to be answered so we went to this seasoned director for answers. It was during this meeting that I found out
that we had received incorrect information at an earlier time. I shared this information, which I believed
to be a fact, at our last banquet. Today
I want to set the record straight and apologize for my stating incorrect
information. It was not done to deceive.
We were told that Michigan has a law that a woman
has to have an ultrasound 24-48 hours before receiving an abortion. That is not correct. I’m thanking God that He brought the truth to
light so I could clear it up. At the
time when I had received this incorrect information, I had asked “why would an
abortion minded women want an ultrasound?” It did not make sense in my mind
that a woman who was seeking an abortion would care to see an ultrasound. I now know why, and it is imperative for
pregnancy centers to share these reasons with the community.
- To confirm and know the gestation of the
- To confirm the pregnancy is in the
uterus and not tubal or ectopic
- To help the mother to make an informed
Many women do not know for sure they are pregnant
and many may even be in denial about it.
They can be farther along than they are willing to admit. The ultrasound will confirm the pregnancy and
show how far along it is. A mother needs
to know this as she is weighing out her options. There
is also the possibility of tubal or ectopic pregnancies. These pose a danger to the woman and she
needs to know so she can seek immediate treatment for it. There is also the sad fact that 10-20% of all
pregnancies end in miscarriage before the 9 week. “Miscarriage
is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. About 10 to 20
percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. But the actual number is
likely higher because many miscarriages occur so early in pregnancy that a
woman doesn't realize she's pregnant.” A
mother who has taken a pregnancy test that confirmed a positive outcome may
later find by ultrasound that she is no longer carrying a child.
The last thing I want to mention is the role that
God plays in changing the parent/parents heart towards life when they see their
child on the ultrasound. These children are
alive, growing, and made in the image of God. When the parents see the reality of
this on the ultrasound screen, up to 95% of them change their hearts towards
This has been a very painful and yet maturing lesson
for me to learn. This misconception
about the law and ultrasound is commonly known and spoke of in pro-life
circles. Where did it start? I don’t
have the answer, but I believe those who speak it do so not knowing the truth
of the law. Please forgive me for this.
I will work diligently at checking all “facts” before speaking them
going forward. It is always my goal to
speak the truth and to never bring harm to this ministry.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do
not lean on your own understanding. In all your
ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight

Pro-life people received a gut punch last week when the
Supreme Court of the United States went against the state of Texas’ law that
protected the lives of women who seek abortions. This was
not a law that took away a woman’s right to have an abortion but to
provide her with a sterile environment in which to have the surgery and a
doctor who has admitting privileges just in case something goes wrong. It truly goes against sound thinking. We, as life affirming folks, can look at this
decision as a reason to stop fighting the good fight or we can look at it as a rally
call to get behind our local pregnancy centers.
Here are some facts about pregnancy care centers. They
speak the truth. When a pregnancy center
puts out abortion facts to a client they come straight from medical
sources. We don’t have to make up
facts. The medical facts speak loud and
clear for themselves. When a woman seeks
an abortion she should know what it entails.
Is it medical or surgical? What are the possible problems that can occur
with either option? How far along is
your pregnancy and is it viable? Could
there be emotional side effects afterwards?
If so, what could that look like?
These are the things pregnancy centers talk about - sounds just like a
surgeon who will present all facts to a patient before a surgery. We expect that from a surgeon, and we should
expect that for every woman who is seeking an abortion too.
Pregnancy centers love women. We want to see them healthy and happy. We accept all who come through our doors. There is nothing that someone has done that
will keep them from receiving our services. We give
them a welcome place to share and not be judged. We cry with them, pray with them, laugh with
them, and walk through life together.
They have a true friend in us.
True light is shining out of these pregnancy centers. This is the light of life, truth, compassion,
love, community, peace, acceptance, and faith. We continue on, even when it seem like we are
beaten, because we aren’t. As long as
pregnancy centers exist, there is hope.
God made us for that very purpose.
His hope and truth are presented daily.
Jesus taught us to love life.
This love starts at the very beginning of life until the ending of it
through a natural death as God has set forth.
Each life is created for a great purpose and pregnancy centers want
everyone who comes through our doors to understand that. A mom and her child are both equally
important in God’s eyes and each should be fought for. We do that daily.
Everyone can be a light for life. Pregnancy centers all over the world are
making a difference because of those who partner with us. We need ultrasound machines and those who can
perform ultrasounds. Statistics show
that up to 95% of women will decide for the life of their child after seeing an
ultrasound. Pregnancy centers also need
financial backers. Many centers cannot
utilize ultrasound capabilities because of the costs that come with it, things
like extra salaries, insurances, and creating the needed space for a medical
examination room are just some of the costs pregnancy centers face. We also need supplies to be donated for
these moms. These include diapers,
diaper wipes, and clothing. When a woman
decides to keep their child they will need the ability to provide these much
needed items for them. Our centers also
need volunteers. There is much work to
do and small budgets to get it done.
Volunteers are invaluable to pregnancy centers. Pregnancy centers need people to invite us to
their churches and clubs so we can get the word out to more people. We need
people to attend our fundraisers and invite their friends to attend too. Try hosting a baby shower or baby bottle
month at your church or clubs. These are
a great way for us to receive the funds and material donations we desperately
need. Pray about becoming a board member or sitting
on fundraising, building, or ultrasound committees. We are always in need of people with
different skills and connections in the community for these positions.
There are so many ways in which you can be a light for your
local pregnancy centers. Please help us
to continue on in our defense of life. You
too can make a difference for life. You
too can shine.
As we just recognized the 43rd anniversary of Roe v Wade on January 22, one cannot help but think on the depth
of meaning in the numbers 43, 58, and 3000. The first number is 43.
Abortion has been legalized for 43 years. I have been alive for 43 years. How many 43 year olds are missing today
because of abortion? I have done a lot
of things in my 43 years. I have
attended school and graduated, gotten married, had children, started college,
started an amazing career, and have become a grandma. For 43 years humans have
been denied the things that I have been able to do because the courts said it
was legal to deny them life.
58 million babies have been
aborted in 43 years. I try to wrap my
mind around this number and it never works.
In the Bible God tells us He has a plan for every life. His plans were not for a life cut short
before it even has a chance to take its first breath outside the womb. He had plans for teachers, mechanics,
doctors, presidents, nurses, missionaries, and the list goes on and on. He made us in His very image because He loved
us so. He knew us before we were even
formed in our mother’s womb. No child
ever comes at the wrong time with God; they only come at the wrong time with
man. 58 million lives cut short because
3000 is the number
of children that are aborted daily. What equates in size to that number? I
looked around on the web and I found this fact: 3000 people had been killed by
Ebola in West Africa up to the point the article was written (Zee News
September 2014). According to the CDC
this outbreak started in March of 2014.
If people died from Ebola at the same rate that babies are being aborted
the numbers would be 1,095,000 a year or 547,500 during that six month period.
If 547,550 people died from Ebola there would be a huge outcry. Where is the outcry for an end to babies
being terminated at this rate?
There is really no
understating the facts behind these numbers. These numbers represent life
denied. 43 years of legal abortions have
ended 58 million lives. Right now,
today, 3000 more will be denied the right to life. Can we not stand up and say "no more"? Who will speak for these who have no voice? Who will be the ones to
see this stop? Me. I will stand and I
will say “no more”. Will you?
A little about me: I was raised in a pro-life home. My mom took me to our local fair when I was 3
months old and took a stand for life with the Oceana County Right to Life. She used me as an example of how precious
life was. I remember her passing this fact on to me and how it made me feel. This started me on the path to where God has
led me to now. My mom gave me a heritage I can be very proud of. It is heritage
that supports the right to life for all.
